FEMORAL HEAD - Avascular necrosis

Description
A somewhat flattened femoral head showing, on the superior surface, an irregularly pitted area of exposed bone; the cartilage in this area has separated from the bone with fragments of bone attached to the undersurface. The detached cartilage shows some irregular splitting. There appears to be a little osteoarthritic lipping.
History
This femoral head was removed prior to arthroplasty; the avascular necrosis is thought to have been steoid-induced.
